Duty-free arrivals store at Bali airport is first for Indonesia

Bali’s Ngurah Rai International airport has unveiled a new duty-free store in its international arrivals terminal, the first of its kind in Indonesia.

The 298sqm Duty Free Arrival (DFA) store had its grand opening last Friday (13 April) – following an earlier soft opening – by Indonesian airports authority, Angkasa Pura, in partnership with Dufrindo International, part of travel-retail giant Dufry.

In contrast to other duty-free stores located in the departures terminal of Ngurah Rai, the DFA requires direct supervision by Customs & Excise, with its implementation specifically regulated by the Ministry of Finance through the regulation of the Minister of Finance of the Republic of Indonesia, Angkasa Pura said.

Robi Toni, director of the Customs Excise Service of the Ministry of Finance, addressed the grand opening event of the DFA, and said that the introduction of duty-free on arrival at Ngurah Rai was important, in order to compete with other countries offering the same service.

He added that within a week of soft launching, 85% of the customers who shopped at the new DFA shop were foreign tourists, with the remainder Indonesian citizens who had just returned from abroad.

Also in attendance at the grand opening ceremony of the DFA were Angkasa Pura’s director of international relations and business development Sardjono Jhony Tjitrokusumo and Thomas Galet, general manager of South Asia Dufry Group.

Ngurah Rai International airport is the main airport in Bali, located close to the tourist locations in the south of the island, 13km from the capital, Denpasar. It serves more than 20 million passengers a year.
