Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International airport is to open its new Maynard H Jackson Jr international terminal on May 16.
The terminal will consist of two duty-free shops on concourse F operated by Duty Free Americas. Both stores are under construction and will offer perfumes and cosmetics, liquor and tobacco and fashion and accessories.
The opening of the international terminal is predicted to coincide with record international passenger numbers and flight operations at the airport. Last year it handled 9.86m international passengers and the Federal Aviation Administration estimates that Atlanta will handle more than 13m international passengers by 2015. Planning, design and construction of the international terminal project has created around 3,000 jobs.
Airport public relations manager marketing and stakeholder engagement Al Snedeker told DFNIonline: “Everything is on track. We are more than 90% complete now. We received our certificate of occupancy for the building and we are in the process of building out all the concessions.
“This is a huge milestone for the airport and city of Atlanta. We are thrilled to be able to offer this world-class facility to our passengers and it is going to go a long way to solidifying Atlanta’s place as a leading destination for business and tourism.”
In terms of the duty-free shops Snedeker said: “There are two spacious duty-free shops prominently located just past the security checkpoint in the area we are calling the transitions hall.”
The new terminal will benefit both international and domestic passengers, according to Snedeker: “It will benefit both passenger groups by consolidating all our international operations on concourses E and F, which connect to form a 40-gate international complex. This will enable extra capacity for domestic flights on the other concourses,” he concluded.
