Airport operator SEA Group has touted the new shopping gallery, which will include 2,500sq of duty-free space, as “the feather in the cap” of the planned terminal one makeover of Milan Malpensa airport.
SEA plans to undergo a complete makeover of T1 in time for the Expo Milano 2015, a non-commercial Universal Exposition, which will see the terminal rebuilt to a total surface area of 350,000sq m including 90 boarding gates.
The new shopping area will be accessible to Schengen or non-Schengen passengers and is expected to be “one of the largest in Europe with a 13,000sq m surface and 46 new sales spaces, including a 2,500sq m duty-free area,” said an SEA statement.
The new mall will increase Milan Malpensa’s total retail offering in departures to 23,000sq m with around 100 shops, bars and restaurants. SEA said: “This testifies to the soundness of SEA’s strategy to expand and improve the retail offering of its airports in line with global best practices.”
The gallery will have a strong Italian flavour and be designed on Galleria Vittorio Emanuele in Milan. Brands to be included in the “Luxury Square” are from Bulgari, Armani, Ermenegildo Zegna, Etro, Ferrari Store, Gucci, Hermés, Montblanc and Salvatore Ferragamo.
The restyling of T1 will be “elegant, bright and airy state-of-the-art steel and glass facility, featuring an aerodynamic design, marble floors, and zinc-titanium cladding” and involve a surface area of 18,000sq m.
In preparation for the Expo Milano 2015, SEA is implementing a range of technological services including an app with a dedicated shop and collect section, flight list, flight planner, Shop&Food section containing a list of the commercial offering and so on.
