The 9th annual Raven Fox Charity Ball will raise funds for UNICEF's projects in Beslan and the
North Caucasus.

On 1 September 2004, hostage-takers entered School Number One in Beslan, South Ossetia, as children and parents celebrated the start of a new school year. Three days later, more than 170 children were dead, together with hundreds of adults and most of the hostage-takers. The children who survived the carnage had seen things that no child should ever see. This tragic day has had a devastating effect on the entire community, and especially the children. According to UNICEF and WHO, any aid must now focus on the medium and long term needs of the Beslan residents.

UNICEF was already working in the area and was able to react immediately after the tragedy, getting basic medical supplies into the over-stretched hospitals overnight. UNICEF was there with classroom equipment and supplies on the day that the children of Beslan went back to school. And UNICEF has been there ever since, helping to create teams of counsellors in the remaining schools and in the community to help children and families rebuild their shattered lives.

The immediate physical needs of the children have been met, but the trauma remains. Now UNICEF is looking to the future to make sure that something good comes out of this tragedy.

The children of Beslan are at the heart of a new UNICEF project to bring Peace Education to schools across the troubled Russian Republics of North Ossetia, Ingushetia, Chechnya and Dagestan.

Every child in Beslan will benefit, from those caught up in the siege at School Number One to those from the wider community affected by this tragedy. But the scheme will go even further, reaching 200,000 children and 1,000 teachers across the region.

For the past eight years, through the Raven Fox Ball, this industry has supported some very worthy causes: Orbis, The Chernobyl Children's Project and Dreamflight to name but a few.

This year, the industry can play a vital role in helping UNICEF look after the children of Beslan and the North Caucasus.
