Zhuhai border store renovations take shape

28-Aug-2003

The first phase of renovations at China's biggest duty-free border shop are being completed this week in time to capitalise on the surge in first-time travellers to the mainland

China has just announced the relaxation of visa restrictions for millions, allowing many Chinese to travel individually for the first time. Previously, only limited numbers could go overseas, and then only in tour groups.

Zhuhai Duty Free, which operates the border shop on the Macau-China border and three others in the Zhuhai area, completed phase one of renovations of its liquor, tobacco, cigar and wine sections this week. Philip Morris, Japan Tobacco and BAT now have their own showcases in the store.

This move will be followed by phase two, including new fashion, accessories and cosmetics sections in the store.

The shop, at a point through which 100,000 people cross every day, belongs to the Zhuhai city government and is not required to be tendered.

DFNI eXTRA understands the operator has its own import licence, and can therefore buy directly from suppliers. It operates independently of China Duty Free Group.

Zhuhai border traffic will soon be boosted further by gamblers visiting Macau's new luxury casinos, due to open over the next two years. A spokesman said: "The company is upgrading and wants to attract brands because many people with money will be coming to the casinos. The plan is to really improve the luxury goods offer."
