Regional development manager European travel-retail James Doherty takes on a new role at the Scotch whisky company

William Grant & Sons has appointed James Doherty as regional director developing markets. He moves from the Scotch whisky supplier's European travel-retail team, where he was regional development manager. His travel-retail responsibilities will be absorbed by the remainder of the division, headed by duty-free director Bob Downing.

Doherty will now oversee the development of the company's brands in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. He said: "While I thoroughly enjoyed my time in the travel-retail team, the challenge of developing and implementing William Grant & Sons' strategy for these important markets is a fascinating prospect and one I couldn't refuse. With the portfolio of brands we have, the exciting conditions of the many markets in my remit and the strong team of business development managers and distributors already in place, the company is in prime position to enjoy long-term growth in the years ahead."

Commenting on Doherty's departure from the travel-retail division, Downing said: "The team's regret at the loss of James is lightened by his success in being appointed to what will become an increasingly important role for the company as we continue to focus on the development of our brands throughout the world. James has proved in his time with us that he has the skill, tenacity and determination to successfully grow brand equity and revenue wherever his attentions are turned."

Wm Grant & Sons is one of the biggest Scotch whisky suppliers in travel-retail and owns the Grant's blended Scotch brand plus leading malts Glenfiddich and The Balvenie.
