The Nuance Group's New Zealand subsidiary has been confirmed as Wellington airport's new duty-free operator

Wellington International Airport Ltd has confirmed the appointment of The Nuance Group subsidiary Regency Duty Free as the airport's new retail operator. Regency emerged triumphant after a controversial tender process, during which Wellington's incumbent operator Duty Free Stores New Zealand attempted to obtain an injunction to halt the process, claiming that the appointment of an additional retailer at the airport would make its business unviable. As reported in DFNI May 1, the failure of the injunction application in the New Zealand courts allowed the airport to reach an agreement with Regency/Nuance.

Regency will take over two stores that are now under construction; one in both departures and arrivals. They will open in late 2006 as the first stage of the renovation of Wellington's international terminal is completed.

Regency will become the sole operator at Wellington when Duty Free Stores New Zealand's contract expires in mid-2009. It will operate at the airport until 2014 and offer what the airport called "a wider range of products", including a Made in New Zealand section offering locally-made fashion items, accessories and wines.

Wellington airport CEO Simon Draper said: "Like other parts of the upgraded international terminal, the Regency Duty Free stores will evoke the vibrancy of Wellington city and its regional surrounds, both in their design and attitude of staff. We are particularly excited about Regency's commitment to showcase Wellington and its emphasis on promoting locally-produced items, as well as offering travellers a wider variety of competitively-priced products."
