WHO turns attentions to liquor

5-Feb-2003

As it nears the end of what it hopes will be a successful campaign to ban duty-free tobacco sales, the World Health Organization (WHO) has turned its attentions to the liquor category

The health body is to host a meeting with the world's biggest liquor suppliers in Geneva on February 12 "to exchange views on the impact of alcohol on global health", according to a WHO statement.

The meeting will focus on corporate social responsibility initiatives, the prevention of drink driving and the marketing and promotion of liquor to young people. One of the drivers behind the initiative is WHO executive director Dr Derek Yach, architect of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control which advocates the suppression of duty-free tobacco.
