US tightens airport security measures

Retailers will not welcome new proposals that could increase the time passengers spend queuing for security checks
US airport security officials have unveiled new procedures that could further damage the amount of leisure time US travellers spend at airports. The measures, prompted by a commission investigating the September 11 attacks and the renewed threat after the suspected bombings of two Russian jets last month, will force all passengers to take off their coats during checks and subject more travellers to pat-down searches.
The measures will be enforced from next week. Authorities are also hoping to introduce new bomb-detection measures, including a machine that scans boarding cards for residue of explosives.
