Trinidad airport gives local suppliers international stage

The new National Entrepreneurship Development Co store at Piarco International airport features products from 19 small local businesses

A new store at Piarco International airport in Trinidad is helping to give local businesses an international platform for their brands. The National Entrepreneurship Development Co (NEDCO), which aims to help stimulate small local businesses, has set up an outlet in the airport’s duty-free area, selling products including fashion goods, fashion accessories, jewellery, food and craftworks manufactured by 19 local companies.

NEDCO hopes the new store will allow local Trinidadian companies the opportunity to grow their businesses in international markets. Rent at the airport store is set at $400 a month with 10% of sales going to NEDCO, a further 5% to the airport and the remainder to the producers.

The store’s official opening—it has been operating at the airport for almost three months—was well timed to coincide with the first round of the cricket World Cup, with some of the matches being hosted in Trinidad and Tobago.
