Travellers to the US are bracing themselves for lengthy delays on arrival into the country from today, when new security measures take effect

Travellers to the US are bracing themselves for lengthy delays on arrival into the country from today, when new security measures take effect. Effective immediately, most foreign visitors will have their photographs taken and fingerprints documented on arrival. Those arriving under the visa waiver programme - which includes most Europeans - are not affected. All arriving passengers must have machine-readable passports.

The new rules apply at all 115 international airports in the US and 14 seaports. The programme will be extended to 50 land border crossings over the next year.
