Munich airport has experienced a record-breaking month and strong growth since the start of the year

Munich International airport has handled 21.7m passengers in the last nine months, 6.9% more than in the same period last year.

The airport authority credits the growth to a 5% increase in the number of commercial take-offs, mainly driven by 32% growth in flights from low-cost carriers and 14% growth in intercontinental traffic. Together these two segments now account for 25% of the total passenger volume.

In September the airport welcomed more passengers in a single month than ever before, handling 2.9m people.

Munich CEO Michael Kerloh said: "This growth rate places us in the top third of Europe's ten busiest airports again this year, which means we are still an important driver of growth in the European aviation industry."
