New passenger terminal building is planned at Chhatrapati Shivaji International airport
Indian engineering company Larsen & Toubro, Australias Leighton and Thailand-based Italian-Thai Development Public Company have made it into the shortlist for the bid to renovate the Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji International airport. The tender, which was entered by 17 companies, includes the construction of a new passenger terminal building, a dedicated cargo terminal as well as airside and landside infrastructure. The contract is expected to be worth between Rs50bn-55bn ($1.21bn-1.33bn).
A Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) spokesperson told the Economic Times that a final decision in this matter should occur over the next three weeks. MIAL, a consortium of GVK Industries and Airports Company of South Africa (ACSA), was appointed to carry out the modernisation of the Mumbai Airport in February 2006.
The revised MIAL plan for renovating Indias busiest airport features a fully integrated airport terminal capable of servicing 40m passengers from both international and domestic flights to be ready by 2012. The terminal at Santa Cruz airport is likely to be converted into a dedicated cargo terminal.
Mumbai International airport handled over 22m passengers in April-March 2007, an increase of 21% over the previous year. Around 45 international carriers operate out of Mumbai. A joint venture between Aldeasa and India Tourism Development Corp recently won the tender for the airports three-year duty-free and domestic retail concession.
