Tenders due at seven Indian airports

Airports Authority of India is expected to launch tenders for duty-free at seven airports later this month, according to local reports
Indian duty-free retailer India Tourism Development Corp's (ITDC) grip on the country's duty-free market is likely to face further pressure as Airports Authority of India (AAI) prepares to launch tenders for duty-free contracts currently held by the former state monopoly at seven airports. The airport authority has confirmed to local media that it will launch tenders at Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calicut, Chennai, Goa, Kolkata and Thiruvananthapuram airports later this month.According to the authority, ITDC's contract to run retail at the airports has already expired, but the retailer will continue to run the stores until the forthcoming tenders are completed. AAI also confirmed that ITDC would be eligible to bid this time, whereas it was barred from participating in the last round of tenders launched in October 2003 due to a dispute over rent owed to AAI.
Previous tenders in India have failed to generate the anticipated interest as a result of small spaces and onerous terms. Dubai-based Flemingo International is the only international operator to have won space at Indian airports through tenders, while Alpha Retail operates outlets at Cochin International airport through a management contract with the airport.
