An exciting opportunity emerges to serve passengers using one of only two rail links between Hong Kong and mainland China

The Kowloon-Canton Railway Corp (KCRC) is set to launch a tender for duty-free operations at Lok Ma Chau station on the border between Hong Kong and mainland China. The five-year contract will start when the company opens the new Lok Ma Chau spur line, scheduled for completion in November 2006.

The new spur line is intended to alleviate over-capacity at Lo Wu station, which serves the only existing rail link between Hong Kong and the mainland. Almost 250,000 passengers use the Lo Wu rail crossing every day.

KCRC has said that it will judge interested parties based on their financial status, past performance, business plan and financial proposal. Companies with less than five years' experience in duty-free retail will not be eligible. Tender documents are expected to be released next month.
