The Baltic ferry operator will launch four new vessels by 2008, including two fast ferries
Estonian ferry operator Tallink is to add four new ferries to its fleet by 2008, including two fast ferries. The company's next vessel, the Galaxy, will be launched in April, with a sister vessel due for delivery in 2008. A fast ferry will begin serving the Tallinn-Helsinki route in spring 2007, while a further fast vessel will be added in the first half of 2008.Tallink purchasing director Magnus Skjörshammer told RavenFox.com: "With the new fast ferry to launch in spring 2007, we'll start work on the new shops as soon as the Galaxy is launched. The shopping area [on board the fast ferry] will cover about 1,500sq m [16,140sq ft]. The focus will be on volume sales, as the trip between Tallinn and Helsinki will take only 1hr 55mins, slightly slower than the existing fast ferries in our fleet." However the new ferries will be able to break ice, enabling them to travel on the Baltic all year round.
Skjörshammer confirmed that fragrances and cosmetics will be placed in a dedicated shop on board the fast ferry. "The category needs to be presented with prestige, not mixed up with high-volume goods."
The imminent addition to the Tallink fleet, Galaxy, breaks new ground for the company in that it appointed suppliers to design its liquor store (DFNI February 1). Tallink selected a number of liquor suppliers to fit out relevant parts of the outlet, which it has divided by sector. The whisky corner, for example, has been designed by William Grant & Sons. British-American Tobacco has designed the tobacco area.
The liquor, tobacco and confectionery store on board the Galaxy covers about 1,000sq m (10,760sq ft).
