More local products are to be included the tax-refund scheme in a bid to encourage tourism
Taiwan's government is considering changes to its tax rebate programme for tourists in order to encourage visitors to the country. The ministry of finance has suggested that the rebate programme, which offers a 5% refund on products bought in registered shops, should be expanded to include local products including ceramics, wooden sculptures, tea and marble. The original scheme, implemented in October 2003, offers rebates to tourists spending over NT$3,000 ($94) at any shop with a TRS (Tax Return Shopping) logo, as long as they take the goods out of the country within 30 days of their purchase. Rebates are collected at the airport on departure.
The ministry is also considering reducing the minimum capital requirement for opening a duty-free store from NT$100m ($3.13m) to NT$50m ($1.57m). An official said the ministry will complete its revision within two months.
