The $39.5bn project includes a new terminal building and a satellite town to be built next to the airport

The government of Taiwan has announced it plans to invest T$1.2tr ($40bn) to renovate Taiwan Taoyuan International airport, according to local reports. The project includes a new terminal, an extra runway and a satellite town to be built next to the airport, which will feature hotels, shopping centres, trade exhibition halls and a residential area. The expanded airport city will occupy an area of 72m sq m (775m sq ft).

Taiwan Taoyuan airport was inaugurated 28 years ago and is considered outdated and inefficient compared with other Asian hubs. A Taoyuan county government official said a recent airport quality assessment ranked the airport 98th out of 136 worldwide, the Associated Press reported.
