A move to allow 1,500 tourists from mainland China into Taiwan daily could boost retailers at Chiang Kai-Shek airport
Taipei Chiang Kai-Shek airport is anticipating strong growth in retail revenues following a decision by the Taiwanese government to allow 1,500 tourists from mainland China into the country each day from October. Multiple restrictions on travel between Taiwan and mainland China have traditionally hindered traffic growth at the airport, and there are currently no direct flights between the two countries. The new decision will allow more than 500,000 mainland Chinese visitors to arrive in the country each year, although they will still have to fly to Taiwan through a third country. Airport authority planning division chief James Lin told DFNI Asia that he anticipated that Chinese tourists would eventually replace Japanese travellers as the highest-spending passenger group at the airport.
"Japanese are the biggest spenders at the airport," he said, "but once the government fully opens its tourism policy to mainland China we can see those passengers becoming the number one buyers."
Commercial revenues – comprising retail, catering and duty-free – rose 10% at Chiang Kai-Shek last year, with international passenger traffic increasing by 8.06%. Duty-free retail accounted for 81.3% of commercial revenue and speciality retail for 17.6%, while catering accounted for the remaining 1.1%.
