TFWA opens Linda Hopkins memorial centre in Sri Lanka

The community centre in memory of the former TFWA conferences and research director is part of a project including a medical centre and houses for tsunami survivors
Tax Free World Association (TFWA) Care, the charitable organisation set up by TFWA in May 2007, has opened a community centre in Sri Lanka’s travel-retail village in memory of former TFWA conferences and research director inda Hopkins, who died in December 2006. The community centre was the third phase of the corporate social responsibility project ─ the first being the official handing over of 20 completed houses to 100 survivors of the tsunami and the second being the official completion of the Dubai Duty Free medical centre.
TFWA president Erik Juul-Mortensen and vice-president conferences and research Thom Rankin visited the village in Nagoda on July 12 to officially open the community hall. The Ravi Library—named after a former Alpha Orient Lanka assistant human resources manager—was inaugurated at the same time. TFWA and The Middle East Duty Free Association (MEDFA), who worked closely with Linda, each donated an initial $5,000 to the cost of the hall, with TFWA adding a further $20,000. Part of the contribution was sponsored by German retailer Gebr Heinemann and fashion house Hugo Boss in association with the annual golf tournament held at the TFWA World Exhibition in Cannes.
TFWA president Erik Juul-Mortensen said: “Having had the opportunity to visit the village and indeed to experience first hand what has been achieved through the inspiring initiative of two individuals, Paul Topping and Rakhita Jayawardene, I am left very proud of being a member of an industry which can take such initiatives and deliver on the promises made.”
Alpha Asia managing director and co-founder of the Alpha Tsunami Trust Fund Paul Topping added: “Linda’s memorial centre was the third phases of this lovely project and still brings out the same emotion as it did three years ago.”
