The Australian government overrules an ambitious landside retail project at Sydney airport

The Australian government has rejected a $200m (US$155m) plan to build a retail centre next to Sydney’s three runways. Transport minister Mark Vaile turned down the proposal, citing fears of an aircraft overshooting the runway and colliding with the mall.

The retail centre plan marked a new strategy for the airport as it was intended to serve local residents and not passengers.

Airport owner Macquarie Bank declined to comment on the decision, but Sydney airport CEO Russell Balding said that more work would be done to overcome Vaile’s fears. The airport is likely to resubmit the plan for approval later in the year.
