Terminal two retail offer helps drive growth in retail sales

Retail revenue at Sydney airport rose by 6.4% in the first half of the 2006/07 financial year, to A$83.2m ($65m). Growth of 7.9% was also posted in the second quarter, reaching A$43.1m ($33.7m).

Total non-aeronautical revenue for the half year increased by 8.3% compared with the same period the previous year to reach A$184.3m ($144m). Retail revenue rose ahead of international traffic growth at 6.3% and 5.7% respectively. The increase in retail revenue reflects the upsurge in passenger traffic, particularly in the second quarter.

Sydney Airport Corp CEO Russell Balding said: “We were pleased by the upturn in international traffic in the second quarter and continue to work hard on our airline marketing initiatives. In addition, we continue to enjoy the benefits of the investment in commercial initiatives, which the airport has undertaken. In particular, the new retail offer in terminal two is delivering strong returns and we look forward to a further improvement after the scheduled completion in the coming quarter.”

In T2 about 90% of the retail redevelopment is now complete, providing an expanded food court and speciality retail offer. The final stages of the T2 redevelopment will be completed in the coming months.
