Zürich airport manager Unique is pressing the Swiss government to introduce arrivals duty-free to capitalise on the country's continuing duty-free status
Zürich Kloten airport manager Unique has held discussions with the Swiss government over the possibility of introducing arrivals duty-free in the country. Head of real estate and marketing Peter Eriksson said that he was hopeful of a positive outcome of further talks scheduled for later this month."We are intensifying our lobbying efforts for arrivals duty-free, which would be a major boost for our business," said Eriksson. "We will speaking with [the Swiss government in] Berne in the next couple of weeks about changes to legislation. We are still suffering quite a lot from legislative limitations—for example, we have to pay for all the infrastructure to transport people to the airport—so I am confident that if we come to them with a way in which we can continue to finance ourselves, they will look favourably on the proposal."
Eriksson said Unique had closely monitored the situation in Norway, where arrivals duty-free was finally introduced earlier this year. He expressed the hope that a decision would be taken by early next year, which would allow Unique to introduce arrivals duty-free stores to Zürich's Airside Center by late 2006.
