The lobby group campaigning for the introduction of arrivals duty-free legislation is expecting an early decision after the government prioritised the issue

The Swiss government is to decide whether it will introduce arrivals duty-free legislation next month according to the group lobbying for the change. If approved, legislation could be introduced by May 2007.

The lobby group, led by Zürich airport authority Unique and including representatives from The Nuance Group and Dufry Group as well as Geneva and Basel-Mulhouse airports, originally expected a decision by the end of the year. Unique head of real estate and marketing Peter Eriksson told RavenFox.com that the authority had decided against trialling duty-paid arrivals stores at Zürich (DFNI January 15) as a result of the change.

"We decided not to introduce the stores yet as there will only be a few months before we open duty-free shops if the outcome is positive," said Eriksson. "We have begun studying possible shop locations and believe we will be able to open shops as soon as legislation is introduced, if the government gives its approval."

Unique said it had not decided which company would operate the arrivals stores if they are introduced.
