Supply improvements boost retail at Sofia

Enhanced computer systems and strong passenger growth have boosted retail results at the Bulgarian airport
Sofia airport has posted a 28.6% year-on-year increase in retail turnover for 2004, with spend per passenger growing by 6.89%. Duty-free director Galina Trolieva told RavenFox.com the rise was driven by a 20.32% increase in passenger levels as well as enhancements to its computer systems.
"We made improvements to our computer system," said Trolieva, "which gave us the opportunity to make the supply process quicker, from ordering stock to putting it on our shelves."
The airport recently extended its accessories area, devoting more space to Swarovski ranges, and more than doubled the sunglasses area. The accessories category enjoyed the biggest year-on-year increase in turnover, with a rise of 52% after the introduction of about 10 new brands.
The airport has yet to decide whether it will put the operation of two 750sq m (8,070sq ft) stores out to tender. "A decision is likely to be taken at the end of April as to whether Sofia will operate the shops or manage them under contract," said Trolieva.
Trolieva was optimistic about the implementation of Bulgaria's proposed tax-free and duty-free bill, which she said should be a great help to the industry if adopted this year.
