Summer Fiesta pays off for ADDF

8-Jul-2004

A surge in passenger numbers at Abu Dhabi International airport has boosted duty-free sales.

Abu Dhabi Duty Free sales rose 8.5% in June compared to June 2003, as the company completed the first month of its Summer Fiesta promotional programme. The programme includes seven stores at Abu Dhabi International airport where discount vouchers for 5% and 10% off retail prices are available. These stores have performed especially well, said the operator.

In June, sales of sports goods have risen 106%, destination souvenirs have surged 57%, luggage is up 43% and books and magazines are up 49%. Toys have risen 26% compared to June 2003, while the Gifts International shop has recorded a rise of 13.2%. Watch sales have risen 8% in the period.

Passenger numbers through the airport have also surged in the first six months after the launch of the emirate's Etihad Airways carrier. The retailer said: "The passenger profile of the new airline has also added to the high-end sales, with the result that the turnover for the first six months of the year is up almost 30% compared to last year."

Abu Dhabi Duty Free managing director Mohamed Mounib said: "The initial results of the Summer Fiesta are very promising, indicating that we will meet our target of a 15% increase in sales by the end [of the period]."
