Sports day news from TFWA Asia Pacific
Competitors battled as much against the heat as each other last week on the official sports day of TFWA Asia Pacific
Along with the traditional golf and cricket tournaments and a gruelling rugby match, the calmer pursuit of Tai Chi was also experienced by some 15 TFWA Asia Pacific attendees.
Rugby
Played in Singapore for the first time as part of TFWA Asia Pacific, the rugby tournament was organised on Sunday evening by Clarins regional director Nicolas Piquereau and hosted by the Singapore Cricket Club.
The travel-retail rugby team, combining the talents of Cannes rivals the Latin Lovers and Terminators, played valiantly against the local Singapore Cricket Club rugby team, eventually losing 52 -10.
Golf
Sponsored by Orlane, Dubai Duty Free and Outils Rubis, the TFWA Golf Tournament was held at the Orchid Country Club. Some 64 competitors teed off at 7.45am and some were still playing more than five hours later. The prospect of winning a Mercedes for a hole-in-one, however, remained as elusive as ever.
Results: Overall men's winner: Dahlan Rashid, managing director of DR Group Holdings, Malaysia. Overall women's winner: Takako Asaki of Blanc de Blancs, Japan.
Cricket
Played on the hallowed turf of the Singapore Cricket Club - and with a real cricket ball for the first time - teams were captained by Tom Thomas of Gateway Duty Free, Australia and Richard Ferne of Brown Forman and TFWA vice president Asia Pacific, with the former winning by 106 runs to 78.
Tai Chi
Close to the summit of Mount Faber, Tai Chi master Teng Tian Kum introduced the techniques of Tai Chi to those preferring a more harmonic and peaceful morning's activity. First developed as a form of martial art for self-defence, the balletic grace of Tai Chi mimics in slow motion the movements of unarmed combat, using the opponent's strengths against himself.
