AENA airports welcome more passengers in April despite an early Easter
In spite of the Easter holiday period falling one month earlier than last year, just over 13.8m passengers passed through the network of Spanish airports controlled by AENA, an increase of 5.4% compared to April 2004
The two biggest airports in the network enjoyed strong growth with traffic at Madrid Barajas increasing to 3.37m (+6.8%) and 2.21m passengers using Barcelona El Prat (+8%).
The country's tourist airports were slightly affected by the change in the holiday period, with most showing slight decreases – Palma de Mallorca traffic fell by 1.1% to 1.41m, Gran Canaria dropped by 0.9% to 785,492, Tenerife South decreased by 8% to 727,600 and Alicante was down by 0.6% to 711,552. Only Málaga showed a small increase with traffic reaching 1.06m, up by 0.3% on the same month the previous year.
During the first four months of 2005, 50.16m passengers used the AENA network, an increase of 7.4% on 2004.
