Parties involved in the new terminal have told DFNI Asia that the facility's soft launch last week was a success

Kuala Lumpur International airport authority Malaysia Airports unofficially opened its new low-cost terminal last week, ahead of its March 23 official opening by the Malaysian prime minister.

Parties involved in the opening told DFNI Asia the event was a success, and that all retail and catering operations are in place ahead of the official launch. Malaysia Airports' Niaga subsidiary, trading under its established Eraman fascia, is to operate all retail at the terminal through two stores, breaking away from the authority's traditional favoured multi-retailer model.

Malaysia Airports anticipates that 4m passengers will use the terminal by the end of 2006, equivalent to 11,000 passengers daily.

The new terminal is likely to compete directly with the budget terminal at Singapore Changi airport, which is also due to have its official opening later this month.
