The Bulgarian airport builds on retail growth of 28% in 2005
Sofia airport has reported sales growth of 40% in the first quarter of 2006 compared with the previous year, driven by an increase in passenger traffic and a wider assortment of products.Duty-free director Galina Trolieva told RavenFox.com: "We are very satisfied with these figures. We have not added any new brands but we have widened the assortment of well-known brands that we offer. The increase in passenger traffic has not matched turnover levels and we received 1.8m international visitors in 2005."
Trolieva also reported that retail sales in Sofia increased by 28% year on year during 2005. She said that the main focus for 2006 would be to press ahead with plans to open a duty-free store at the new terminal. The airport has yet to decide whether to launch a tender for the contract, which is expected to cover about 700sq m (7,532sq ft).
Sofia airport features four duty-free outlets: a 300sq m (3,228sq ft) shop in the departures hall, a 160sq m (1,721sq ft) arrivals shop, an 8sq m (86sq ft) kiosk in the VIP lounge and a 60sq m (645sq ft) outlet for cabin crew.
