US company First Data Corp has discontinued its SkyTeller inflight currency services operation with immediate effect as a direct result of the current airline crisis.

In a statement, sales director Europe-Middle East-Africa, Eric Dua and vice-president and general manager Robert Drab said: "The recent terrorist attacks of 11 September have had such a devastating effect on the global airline industry that many of the major airlines are now fighting for survival rather than focusing on adding new in-flight services. Therefore, the decision has been made to discontinue our efforts of launching SkyTeller In-Flight Services.

"Although this has been a difficult decision, SkyTeller and its parent company, First Data Corp feel it necessary to refocus our efforts and resources on other areas of our business."
