The Baltic ferry operator may be put on the market after struggling to perform in the face of rising fuel costs and intra-EU duty-free abolition

Silja Line parent company Sea Containers has confirmed that it could sell the Baltic ferry operator, according to respected shipping journal Lloyd's List. A company spokesman revealed that the sale was one of several options regarding the future of the ferry firm, which has struggled as a result of the abolition of intra-EU duty-free and rising fuel costs.

The spokesman added that a decision could be announced this week. Some analysts have cited Estonian rival Tallink as a potential buyer, while others believe the firm lacks the financial backing to take on Silja.
