Sharjah has announced the creation of a new airline, Air Arabia

The move was announced yesterday at a press conference hosted by His Excellency Sheikh Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Thani, who is chairman of the department of Civil Aviation and Dr. Ghanem Al-Hajri, director-general Civil Aviation & Sharjah Airport Authority.

Sheikh Abdullah said market demand prompted the establishment of the new airline. He added that it should bring positive economic and social benefits to Sharjah.

He said: "We believe Air Arabia will improve and complement air transportation for both the nationals and the residents of Sharjah and Northern Emirates. It will also provide travellers and the tourist with yet another gateway to the United Arab Emirates. It is natural that Air Arabia will create more jobs and business opportunities for the nationals and the residents of the United Arab Emirates".

Dr Ghanem said the business plan for the airline was being finalised, adding: "Our intention is to have a small airline, serving our people and our business needs."
