A new report from the chief medical officer has labelled European cross-border recommended limits of 3,200 cigarettes "ridiculous"
UK chief medical officer Liam Donaldson has suggested that the government use its presidency of the European Union to lower cross-border tobacco recommended allowances from 3,200 sticks to 200. In his annual report, Donaldson also suggested that limits for ryo tobacco also be reduced, from 3,000g to 250g.
Donaldson cited cheap tobacco as undermining the country's health goals, and labelled current European guidelines "ridiculous". The report suggested that 25% of all cigarettes smoked in the UK, and 75% of all ryo tobacco used, is untaxed, either legally or illegally.
