Second Bucharest tender planned

A further tender to select companies to operate duty-free shops at Bucharest Otopeni International airport, is to be held next month with a completion date of May 20 2002, the Romanian Minister of Public Works Transport and Housing, Miron Mitrea said today. The deadline for proposals is May 13.

A similar tender for the duty-free shops at Otopeni was cancelled last week after only one, out of the ten companies that had shown interest in the tender, put forward a bid. TRW understands that the pre-qualification conditions put forward in the original tender were very restrictive. For example only Romanian companies were allowed to participate. Participants were required to have a minimum three years of experience in Romanian duty- free business. There were also some onerous financial conditions relating to the leasing of the 500sq m (5,380sq ft) selling space and 200sq m (2,152sq ft)  of warehouse which amounted to $500,000 per month. A security deposit in the form of a $5m letter of credit was also specified.

A separate tender to select companies to operate other self-service retail stores at Otopeni will follow a day later. The deadline for applications for the duty-paid tender is also May 14.
