Food and beverage retailer SSP wins Oslo airport convenience store concession
Airport, railway station and roadside caterer Select Services Partner (SSP) has secured a deal to run all five convenience stores at Oslo International airport. It has also gained a five-year extension to its contract to run the Salmon House fine food outlet at the airport, where it operates a total of 25 food and convenience stores.
The convenience store concession includes four Point outlets, where newspapers, magazines and books are expected to account for over half of all sales. The stores, which vary in size from 50sq m (538sq ft) to 180sq m (1,937sq ft), will also offer tobacco, travel essentials and food. The fifth concession, called Flavours, will mainly offer food including sandwiches and hot food to take away.
SSP will take control of the five stores on January 1 next year. Two of the units are currently run by a rival retailer. SSP plans to refurbish these two stores in the first few weeks of 2007. The remaining shops will be refurbished or rebuilt and open by the end of March next year.
Oslo airport director of terminal and commercial development Espen Ettre said: "SSP faced very tough competition for this new contract. However SSP's offer was chosen because it offered both an attractive mix of brands and a solid commercial position." The construction of a full-scale 130sq m (1,400sq ft) mock-up of the Flavours concept near to the airport also "helped to offer a clear demonstration of the merits of the brand", said an airport spokesperson.
SSP was sold by catering firm Compass to private equity firm EQT earlier this year.
