SAS Trading has been awarded a five-year contract to operate the duty-free shop at Aarhus International airport in Denmark. It follows negotiations between SAS and the Airport Authority of Aarhus, which wanted to relinquish control of the retail operations, including the 250sq m (2,700sq ft) duty-free shop.

The airport is operated jointly by three local councils which wanted to concentrate on core airport operations. SAS will take over on May 1.

Aarhus is the second biggest airport in Denmark, handling 250,000 international departing passengers a year and 400,000 domestic travellers.

SAS trading international business development director Robert Hernadi said: "This is a very good contract for us. Retail turnover at Aarhus is about DKr10m ($1.2m) a year and we are confident of increasing sales."

Scheduled and charter flights operate from Aarhus to neighbouring Baltic states, as well as key European cities and Mediterranean destinations.
