Retail resilient as BAA profits fall

30-Jul-2002

BAA today announced a 5% fall in pre-tax profits for the first quarter to June 2002

But retail continued to prove resilient, said the group, with net retail income up 1.6% to £126m ($197m) and net retail income per passenger up 3.9% to £3.96 ($6.18).

Overall, profits were £143m ($223m), and BAA put the decrease down to falling traffic, added security costs and an increase in borrowings.

World Duty Free Europe revenue for the period was unchanged at £86m ($134m) and operating profit from UK airports was £5m ($7.8m), the same as last year.

BAA said a range of factors, from stock market turmoil to global security concerns, were impacting its business, but said it had adapted well with new marketing initiatives and better management of space.

In the three months to June, passenger traffic at BAA airports fell to 32m, down 1.7%.
