Respected UK analyst JRA has launched a subscription-based project aimed at tracking the recovery in travel post the September 11-orientated slump.

The project will track and forecast recovery in airport passengers and airport retail sales. Under an exclusive agreement with JRA, Duty-Free News International will present selected highlights. The full findings will only be available to suscribers (see below).

JRA said: "Recent events have created considerable uncertainty about the short-term future for air passenger numbers, and there is necessarily a delay in data availability from airport authorities. In order to fill this data gap, we propose, starting November, to interview every month for six months, 6,000 air travellers about their future travel plans and airport purchase intentions."

Based on this data, JRA will forecast passenger flows over the next month, three months, six months and year. It will also forecast travel-retail sales. The project will focus on five markets: the US, UK, Japan, Germany and France. The 6,000 monthly interviews will be apportioned as follows: 1,000 direct telephone and 5,000 by internet.

Travel numbers have declined. They will rise and the forecast rate of rise is essential information for all of those with an interest in the travel industry.

JRA is on line with its website www.jradata.com which explains the project further. Subscribers to the service may be able to add a limited number of their own questions at an additional charge.

The project is explained, along with others which are relevant. A brochure is available and enclosed. From the website you can download a sample page from the proposed report. An important strength is subscribers1 ability to pose special questions. These slots will be limited but flexible.

The air passenger module will cost Eur1,500 ($1400 and $650) and the optional travel-retail module a further Eur700 ($650). For further information, e-mail JRA on info@jradata.com
