Raven Fox reports analyse airport retail expansion

A unique insight into the factors driving retail across airports in the Americas and the Caribbean will soon be available from TRW sister division Raven Fox Research.
Published this Spring, two new reports examine some of the factors driving retail at airports in the Americas and give an in-depth view of developments.

Airport Retail Opportunities North America analyses new airport and terminal projects at over 60 airports in Canada and the US. And Airport Retail Opportunities Latin America and the Caribbean details developments at over 40 airports in 25 countries.

According to the report, strong passenger growth is fuelling an upsurge in airport retail sales in the Americas, both in the tax- and duty-free and duty-paid sectors. Privatisation is helping to fund much-needed airport projects to take advantage of this growth and is already well established in Latin America. And further north in the US airports are employing new strategies to boost spending among an increasing number of passengers.

Latin America's long-neglected airport infrastructure is gradually being upgraded to cope with rapid air traffic growth. Most countries in South and Central America have already introduced programmes to privatise their airports and privatisation is expected to have a significant effect on the airport retail market in the whole Latin America and Caribbean region. Airport privatisation is only just beginning to make an impact in the US, however, but the country is expected to see a boom in the number of privatisations later this decade.

Since 1997 the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has been accepting applications for the Airport Privatization Pilot Program. Despite the limited influence of privatisation in the US so far, the country is the focus for new airport retail space coming on-line in the Americas this year with Philadelphia, Minneapolis St Paul and Detroit airports opening new terminals and New York JFK its rebuilt terminal four.

While in Latin America global owner-operators, construction specialists and financial companies are bringing much-needed funding as well as airport development, management and retail know-how, in the US retail expertise from the domestic market is also making its mark in the airport sector. Meanwhile, private expertise and investment is helping to bring about a major shift in consumer attitudes. The reports, from the most experienced research team in the travel-retail trade media, are a must read for all executives serving the travel-retail industry.
