Provimar overhauls its Cuban duty-free business

(16-Oct-2001) - CUBA. Spanish company Provimar, which has a supply and management contract for shops at Cuba?s international airports, has opened five new stores at Varadero airport. Its expansion project with Cuban firm Cimex began two years ago when new stores at La Habana airport opened.

Risk capital financier 3i Spain, a subsidiary of UK-quoted group 3i, has taken a 49% stake in Barcelona-based ship supplier and duty-free shop operator Provimar.The purchase follows a management buyout led by managing director Juan Sunet and executive director Werner Muehlemann. Sunet and Muehlemann have purchased the company from outgoing chairman Fernando Puche and Swiss-based Cornwall Holdings for Eur27m ($26.7m).
