The retailer's new integrated system will make extensive use of industry standard SAP Retail software modules

Alpha Retail is to implement a new integrated IT system that allows it to connect head office retail management operations to electronic points of sale and mobile handheld terminals across its shop network. The company launched Project IRIS (Integrated Retail Information System) to review its IT infrastructure after strong growth in its retail and catering businesses, and appointed consultancy CiberNovasoft to provide a system that allows it to maintain tighter management of its retail outlets.

CiberNovasoft, whose clients include UK retailers Halfords, B&Q and Unwins, will install its novaRetail software for small- to medium-sized retailers. The software uses several modules from German software company SAP's retail programme—including finance, warehouse management, forecasting and replenishment functions—and Alpha is to upgrade to the full SAP Retail software this year if store pilot tests are successful.

Previously Alpha Retail's information infrastructure comprised several disparate systems. The new integrated system will allow the retailer to combine core retail management functions at head office—such as finance, merchandising and human resources—with warehouse and supply chain management.
