Privatisation boosts Melbourne retail

18-Feb-2003

Melbourne International airport has seen a 74% rise in retail revenues since the airport's privatisation in 1997, according to authority Australia Pacific Airport Corporation

In its 2002 annual report, the company claimed retail revenue-which now accounts for 40% of total airport revenue-reached A$79.9m ($47.3m) for the year.

The company said that the 64% increase in retail space since the airport's privatisation had helped it achieve an 8.8% increase in retail revenue per passenger in 2002, despite a 4.2% decline in passenger numbers caused primarily by the bankruptcy of low-cost national carrier Ansett.
