DFNI understands the company’s long-serving general manager will remain in the duty-free industry in Uruguay

Uruguayan border shop operator Neutral has announced the departure of general manager Daniel Pomies. DFNI understands that Pomies will become the general manager for Uruguay at a leading duty-free retailer about to embark on a crucial expansion programme in the country.

Pomies has occupied several senior posts during his 16 years at the duty-free specialist and steered the company through a difficult period when they lost the duty-free concession at Montevideo Carrasco International airport at the end of 2003. Pomies was actively involved in taking Neutral’s border shops to a new level with new store openings in Rivera, Chuy and Rio Branco, and their ambitious expansion programme has been noted by several of their industry competitors.

Neutral principal shareholder and chairman Victor Hugo Mesa said that he was sad to see Pomies leave but that he couldn’t stand in the way of any of his people when presented with new opportunities. Mesa said: “The legacy he leaves behind in terms of his contribution is significant but at the same time the new job is a great opportunity and challenge for Daniel and we recognise that even the most successful among us do move on.”
