Philippines to expand Manila airport

23-Sep-2004

Manila's Diosdado Macapagal International Airport will be expanded into a "world-class" passenger destination within two years, according to local reports

The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) has set aside Ps2bn ($40m) for a two-year expansion of the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport (DMIA), formerly known as Clark International Airport, news agency Asia Pulse has reported.

"Of the amount, Ps1bn ($20m) will come from MIAA collections and the balance from the support of concerned agencies," MIAA general manager Alfonso Cusi was quoted as saying.

The project will include a passenger terminal, tube, air bridge and ramp, the report continued.

Once it becomes fully operational, DMIA hopes to attract low-cost airlines carrying tourists and business passengers. The project is in line with the government's plans to reduce congestion in metropolitan Manila and spur economic activity in the surrounding area.
