The Philadelphia Marketplace anniversary celebrations will include special events, competitions and giveaways

Philadelphia International airport (PHL) is celebrating the tenth anniversary of its concessions programme this month with special events, competitions and giveaways. Philadelphia Marketplace Food & Shops, a partnership between the airport authority and retail operator MarketPlace Redwood, first opened on June 4 1998 with 19 retailers in the airport’s B/C Connector and a total of 67 retailers throughout the airport. Today there are over 160 shops, restaurants and services spanning 135,000sq ft (12,541sq m) of retail space across the airport’s seven terminals.

Philadelphia Marketplace’s tenants will be honoured at a cocktail reception on June 4 at the Airport Marriott hotel. A fashion show will entertain travellers on June 6, featuring food and prize giveaways. Passengers will receive a limited-edition 10th Anniversary tote bag made of recycled materials. Stores will also offer special discounts throughout the month of June, and one passenger will win a $1,000 shopping spree at Philadelphia Marketplace by entering online at http://www.philamarketplace.com.

The City of Philadelphia’s acting director of aviation Charles Isdell said: "MarketPlace Redwood has done a superb job in making Philadelphia International one of the best airports in the country for shopping, eating, and finding passenger-friendly amenities. We congratulate MarketPlace on its successes in the past 10 years and its contributions in making PHL one of America's best airports."

In November, the Philadelphia Marketplace will open a new retail area at the D/E Connector, increasing the available space by 15,000sq ft (1,393sq m) and featuring new shops and restaurants to be announced later this year.

Philadelphia Marketplace vice-president and general manager Clarence LeJeune said: "Passengers will have even more shopping and dining choices when the D/E expansion opens for business. This is a great opportunity for us to introduce new retail concepts and continue to exceed our passengers' expectations."
