The Nuance Group is to work with Portland Design at Bangalore International airport on its commercial planning strategy
The Nuance Group is to work with Portland Design on the commercial planning of its retail offer at Bangalore International airport in India, scheduled to open in 2008.
Portland was appointed by The Nuance Group earlier this year as its design consultant to assist with its bid proposal for the 3,200 sq m (34,432 sq ft) duty-free and retail concessions in the domestic and international terminals at Bangalore.
Portlands concept was to create a retail design master plan, which would not only be unique to Bangalore but would also establish a sense of place and brand that would create the basis on which to forge the retail master plan.
Portland head of environmental graphics Lara Farnham commented: As Bangalore is known as Indias Garden City we took inspiration and reference from flowers and nature, as their geometry has a strong similarity with Rangoli patterns one of Indias popular art forms.
Portland has employed this technique to depict the main functions within the landside and airside shopping areas of the airport, including planning, retail adjacencies, passenger circulation and colour palettes for the environment.
Portland director of environments Lewis Allen said: We have used Rangoli patterns in a variety of scales within the block planning of the terminals to create abstract shapes that define overall areas of high passenger density and confluence with more refined and concentrated patterns for kiosks and seating locations. In both domestic and international terminals, the patterns create welcoming focal points in the airside locations.
