Nuance to invest in confectionery and technology at Toronto
Tentative plans emerge as The Nuance Group prepares to begin its new concession at Lester B Pearson airport
Fashion, confectionery and technology will be among the categories to benefit from The Nuance Group's development plans for Toronto Lester B Pearson airport. The retailer, which was awarded a 10-year extension to its duty-free concession at the airport last month, told TRW that, while it would have to wait until its lease agreement was finalised to reveal concrete plans, the three product sectors were certain to gain from the extra space it had been granted, as well as from the category rent structure of the new contract.
Confectionery already constitutes a large portion of Nuance's Toronto business, but the category-by-category agreement allows for greater flexibility within categories and should allow low-margin items, including confectionery, to increase their share. But the group could not confirm reports by a leading source that plans put on hold before the tender would be carried out shortly. A busy promotional schedule supported by sampling, branded units and mascots would be key to the renewed offer, the supplier told TRW.
Technology is sparsely represented at Toronto presently, but a senior Nuance spokesman said that high levels of tax made the sector an attractive growth opportunity, particularly for high-end products.
