The Nuance Group expresses its determination to build its business in North America despite the loss of its Vancouver contract from 2007

Incumbent duty-free operator at Vancouver International airport The Nuance Group has expressed disappointment that it failed to retain the duty-free concession at the airport, following its defeat to Aldeasa/HMSHost in a closely-fought tender.

Nuance Group CEO North America Richard Rendek said: "We have assessed the value of this concession with the benefit of 10 years of on-site experience along with the assistance of our international colleagues, and put forward a very competitive bid. Therefore even though we are disappointed, we believe our team put forth a very intelligent and well thought out qualitative and quantitative submission."

However, Nuance remained upbeat with regard to further opportunities to expand in North America. CEO Roberto Graziani said: "We are committed to aggressively pursuing new growth opportunities in North America."

Nuance has been the duty-free operator at Vancouver since 1996 and will continue to operate there until the end of its concession term, which expires on May 31 2007.

Nuance's other operations in North America include the duty-free concession at Toronto Lester B Pearson International airport. It recently won contracts to run retail at airports in Houston and Fort Lauderdale.
