Nuance builds Roman empire
As predicted in DFNI eXTRA December 4 2002, The Nuance Group has secured a six-year contract to operate 12 specialist shops at Rome Fiumicino airport, concerning 1,800sq m (19,400sq ft) of retail space across all the location's terminals
The concession, previously operated by Weitnauer, mainly concerns the fashion and accessories category but the stores will also offer watches, sunglasses and fine food. The contract includes a four-year extension option.
In a statement, Nuance said it planned to refurbish all 12 stores by the end of August and would offer leading Italian fashion brands including Stefanel, owned by one of the operator's major shareholders. Nuance will also introduce an Italian fine food concept, Delizie, alongside Spirit of Italy, a concept based on Italian food and table culture.
In addition to the new stores, Nuance is working on a deal to offer Fiumicino airport authority Aeroporti di Roma a comprehensive range of duty-free services, including shop design, purchasing and logistical services for the liquor, tobacco, beauty and confectionery categories. The operator hoped to finalise the deal by the end of the year.
Nuance president and ceo Peter Petersen said: "Italy is one of the world's top tourist markets and has been a priority in our expansion plans for some time. This long-term contract with Aeroporti di Roma will allow Nuance to build up a sustainable base in yet another country of the world."
